Harrison Butker Inspiring or Infuriating? Or maybe just thought provoking.

The internet is in an uproar and I get it - the media is spinning this and people are responding to headlines.

If you’re frustrated I’m not saying you shouldn’t be but make sure you watch the full video before you decide.

Here are some thoughts.

Have WE been sold a lie or is *homemaker* what makes this so confronting?

I had to go back and listen to the full 20 minutes multiple times.

Trying to see what others saw, however… I didn't.

In my mid 20’s, I was interested in my career.

Hustling and grinding to get a promotion and accolades.

Most of my friends (female) were excited about babies and getting married. Building a life with their husband.

I would disregard this - believing what I chose was the “right” option.

I would believe this into my 30’s. When I had 2 girls and my beliefs crumbled.

  • Health deteriorated

  • Spending little time with my girls and telling myself this is what I wanted

  • Yet feeling lost in my "success"

Here is what #butker said …

“You’re sitting at the edge of the rest of your lives.”

“For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of what you have achieved.”

“I think you the women have had the most diabolical lies told to you.”

You are thinking about “all the titles and promotions you are about to get”

“Some of you will lead successful careers but I would venture to guess the majority of you are most excited about marriage and the children you will bring into this world”

  • Is this no longer true? Women are no longer excited about babies, marriage, and creating a home?

  • Isn’t he just giving us permission to go out and have a career but also it’s okay if you don’t want to be a #bossbabe and instead cherish being a wife and mom (not that we need permission from him)

  • I didn’t hear him say you couldn’t do both - actually it felt like he was saying you probably WOULD

We are living at a time when depression in women is increasing (36.7% as of May 2023 Source: Gallup), a mental health crisis is on the rise (May is dedicated to this), and anxiety/overwhelm have become the norm. Balancing motherhood, your career, and everything else in life is a BIG decision.

Perhaps we need a change?

Perhaps we need to pause and evaluate what we want?

Perhaps this way (the way we are operating) isn’t the way?

So I’m glad he asked women to think about this and it created an uproar. Because every woman I know, who has or had a successful career and has looked back, it was their family, their kids, their marriage, the other parts of their lives that were the most important.

I think if anything he asked women to think about what is important before they went off into the world. I wish someone would have given me this perspective before I went out into the world.

👉🏼 I would love to hear your thoughts on what you think about this topic.
